Why Might iCloud Fail?
iCloud has become the most reviewed solution on tech blogs and news sites in the last days/weeks. The promising iCloud solution will offer supreme usability options to the users of iOS 5 platform. However, all that looks Yellow is not really Gold. The same holds true for iCloud too. The end users are not sure about the security aspect circling around the solution at this point in time. The data is stored over the cloud interface and not locally. As a result, the end users are left with limited control over the stored data on the cloud. A user can only access their stored data over the cloud interface when he or she comes in an active internet connection. The data would be secured through login credentials and password but what if it is misused by the family members? The data once synced with all iOS devices held by the users will highlight multiple copies of the same data set. The other aspect that haunts the tech analysts is over the ownership of data hosted over the iCloud interface. As technically, data will be hosted over Apple’s hosting space and be available to the user on-demand through Cloud login only. The end user will have 100% control of data over local storage only.
The layman users are unsure about the functionality as yet and Apple too hasn’t release full blown documentation pertaining to iCloud solution. These factors can work against Apple’s strategy and back fire the launch of the service. Apple also faces threat from competing vendors who might reciprocate the same service in couple of months by the time fall sets in as that is when iCloud will be available for the retail users. Cloud based solutions are free at the moment as long as end users can limit their storage to 5 GB. However, business customers would require more data storage room for channelizing their transactional and other operational level work. They will be better off storing these on external secured disks and share point servers than on iCloud. The apprehensions circling round the solution might eventually lead it to failure in no time. It will be interesting to note the actual performance of the solution in the competitive economy that demands high usability experience rather than the smarter looking ones. Apple iCloud is expected to hit the market by fall of 2011 and end users can download it for free of cost on the fly.
