A lot of people are talking about SEO and how important it is for small business, and I agree. I believe it is integral for every single business to not only have a website but to also make sure that it is getting great organic search rankings in Google.

However, I have noticed that a lot of people seem to be forgetting one very important step, when it comes to optimising a local businesses website – and that is Google Places.

If you complete a location based search for a product or service, no doubt you would have seen the map with the markers, as well as the corresponding business. This is Google Places and is there are a couple of reasons that your business NEEDS to be listed.

Places Usually Ranks Higher Than Regular Organic Listings

No use getting annoyed by your competition ranking higher than you are, claim your business location on Google Places and rank above them.

The map and listings are usually placed above the majority of search results for the local term, and so even if you are ranking number 1 in Google – you could still be listed half-way down the page.

Allows You To Rank Twice On The One Page

Your Google Places listing is completely separate to your organic listing, which means that you can quite possibly be listed on the map as well as also using to rank on the first page of Googles results organically. This means that you will have two listings on the same page – which conveys a feeling of trust and reputation in the eyes of the searcher.

Gives Your Website A ‘Human’ Feel

Sometimes the internet can been seen as very impersonal and you never know if you are looking at a local businesses website or a company from the other side of the world.

Having your business location marked on a map that is close to where the person making the search actually lives let’s them know that they will be dealing with a real local business. Things brings a more personable or ‘human’ touch to the internet.
If you want your business to be found by local people searching Google, that making sure you claim your business on Google places is a ‘must do’.

On page seo, definitely has a part to play when it comes to organic listings so you will want to consult with an seo consultant (why not find on using Google Places?). You can add your business without having a website, but if you are looking to have a website build for you, then WebsiteBuildr is a local Sunshine Coast web design firm that would love to work with you.

This is an excellent recommendation for all businesses with a “local” physical presence.

It’s also a good idea to submit your business to Bing’s local listings. Although much less prominent than Google, they do get some traffic.

I wasn’t actually aware that Bing had local listings as well. Thanks for letting me know, I’m going to learn more about it now.
