As SEO is not an exact science, there is no definitive way to optimize your website. This leads to experimental methods and advice being given online which can end up turning into a big game of Chinese whispers. A large amount of website owners are currently making fundamental mistakes in their SEO, based on incorrect information or assumptions upon what will give them the best results as well as just plain lack of understanding. If you are a business owner, your primary skill set isn’t going to be in Search engine marketing (except if your business is SEM), so you can’t expect to know everything.

1. Poor Anchor Text

Alot of the time you will see people putting links on their website like the following example: -

For more information click here

Taking into consideration that the way search engines determine what this link is about or referring the user to, ‘Click Here’ isn’t a very good description of the link. What would be better (Not necessarily the best) could be: -

2. Directing all links to your root domain

When users are searching for content, what they are wanting to find is a web page which contains the information they require. Google wants to provide the user with the best possible and relevant page to their search term. Many people will place backlinks to their website going straight to their root domain, e.g. “”. This is giving the domain a greater trust with the search engine. What you are not doing is ranking pages. You should always be giving a page reference in any backlinks you place.

3. Duplicated Titles and Meta Tags

Alot of websites end up having duplicate meta tags and titles for several reasons, forgetful developers, lazy developers or inexperienced developers. Often web pages will be copied and pasted to save from retyping the entire template of a website. The meta tags are the often forgotten and duplicated from page to page. Although Meta tags are not weighted very highly by search engines, duplicate content is frowned upon. This is also not just for the search engines benefit, this is for your visitors. The meta description shows up in a small bit of text for each search engine result, this is what the users will see that describes the page. You wouldn’t see a magazine with two stories with exactly the same title and description, especially if they didn’t relate closely to the story itself.

4. SEO is not a one-off event

When you optimize your website, its content and build some backlinks. It doesn’t end there. Alot of people don’t realise that SEO is an ongoing process which involves new content, new backlinks and new social networking activity. Google loves fresh content, by providing regularly updated content and a regular stream of backlinks, your search engine ranking will rise very well overtime. By performing SEO as a one-off situation, you may initially gain a reasonable ranking, but if this isn’t added upon, the ranking will slowly slip overtime. An example could be washing your car, if you clean and polish it regularly, its going to look good for longer. If you wash it once and then never again, its only inevitably going to get dirty.

5. Have some patience

SEO is like looking after a child, the more love and attention you give it, the better it will be when it matures. However you can’t expect your child to grow up overnight, it takes time in which you need patience. With SEO it can take months to see any change or even see your website show up at all, especially on competitive search terms. Don’t panic and try and change tactics, just carry on creating fresh content and relevant backlinks and it will pay off in the long run and will be driving your website to search engine success.
