The Uncharted franchise has become one of the premiere video game franchises on the Playstation 3, if not on all video game consoles in general. The first Uncharted game, Drake’s Fortune, stormed onto the scene in November of 2007 and took the role of the premiere action adventure title from Tomb Raider. Uncharted 2 followed in November of 2009 and upped the anti with more set-pieces, more story, and multiplayer action. The multiplayer action was often doubted, but turned out very good.

In November of 2011 the 3rd iteration of the franchise will drop with Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Multiplayer will once again be a key component of the game, and developer Naughty Dog is determined to make sure that it is as good as it can be.

The Uncharted 3 beta will be multiplayer only, featuring both competitive and co-op multiplayer but none of the single player campaign. It will allow players to try out six competitive game modes including team deathmatch, three team deathmatch, team objective, free for all, plunder and high stakes alongside three co-op game modes including adventure mode and hunter mode. The final game mode has yet to be announced.

Chief among Naughty Dog’s arsenal for creating a great multiplayer game is the . An open beta is a period of open testing whereby a large collection of players can simultaneously test the game. This helps the developer to find bugs and balance issues that go beyond what a small team of QA members have the resources to do. In exchange, the gamers get to play the game early and demo it as they test it.

In this case, gamers will get to test the game a full five months early as the is set to begin on June 28th, with the full game not releasing until November. The beta doesn’t technically begin until July 5th, but PSN+ members and people that pre-ordered inFamous 2 get early access to the demo. Of course, with the recent Playstation Network issues everyone is a PSN+ member for the next month, which means that everyone will have early access to the Uncharted 3 beta on June 28th. The beta ends on July 13th, giving testers a full two weeks to try the game out and find all the bugs they can.

In addition, the beta will let you try out a small sample of weapons, weapon mods, medal kickbacks, and boosters. These will be limited in selection, with no more than six of any of them, but that’s the price you pay for paying for free. If you’re not familiar with kickbacks, they’re similar to boosters but much more powerful. Additionally, you have to earn them over the course of each match and at the end of the match you lose them.

Finally, the beta will feature two maps that we know about so far called “Airstrip” and “Chateau”. Each map will feature dynamically changing terrain, with Chateau being the same burning French chateau that we saw in the first Uncharted 3 gameplay footage. The first will be constantly altering the map as the round goes on.
