The Apron Renaissance
For centuries women stayed at home to take care of their families and ensure the home was in a presentable and comfortable state at all times, but in particular to welcome the husband home from a hard day at work.
A memento of this time is the ‘apron’. This simple piece of scrap material tied around the waist or neck has covered a multitude of sins over the years and has been a lifesaver in many more ways than one. Over time the apron has been used, not only to protect our clothes from spraying food during cooking and baking, but also as a potholder to protect work surfaces from being scorched by hot pans, as a duster for a quick spot of spring cleaning before answering the door to unexpected guests. Farmer’s wives used their aprons to carry eggs and fresh vegetables and shy children would often spend their time hiding behind their mother’s wide aprons.
Nowadays aprons have come on in leaps and bounds; they are no longer just a practical garment to protect our clothing, but a complete fashion statement in their own right. Aprons now are available in such fun designs for men, women and children that once you’ve tried one on; it is unlikely you’ll ever want to take it off.
A 2005 article in the Wall Street Journal claimed that the apron is “enjoying a renaissance as a retro-chic fashion accessory” in the United States. There is no doubt about this; a quick Google search on apron companies in the US and you will quickly discover many have sprung up across the country. The majority of these companies are creating aprons from scratch to an incredibly high standard and in a multitude of wonderfully creative designs and fabrics.
This ‘apron renaissance’ may not yet be quite as obvious within the UK, but it is certainly enjoying a hike in popularity there too. This could very well be due to the stateside love of the apron, which has been reflected in many of the UK’s most favored TV series such as Desperate Housewives, Samantha Who and 30Rock.
There is a recently launched UK website now specializing in pretty aprons. ‘’ features an extensive selection of novelty aprons from top American apron designers such as , Cupcake Provocateur, Tayga Cooking aprons and many more.
