One of the hardest things for most dieters is dealing with restaurants. Dieters often avoid restaurants entirely – which is a shame because most people enjoy eating out – or they splurge and go off their diets.
The choice can be especially difficult because eating out with friends is a major social activity for many people.
Fortunately, it’s quite possible to enjoy your favorite restaurants without going overboard, by following some simple tips.
- Start by choosing a restaurant that offers healthy food (for example, Fresh Choice instead of Denny’s, Subway instead of MacDonald’s). Many restaurants post menus on their websites, so you can see the choices available before making a decision about where to eat. Some restaurants are even starting to post nutritional information online!
- Let your companions know you’re dieting, so they will understand your choices, and not press you to eat high-fat or high-calorie dishes.
- Drink water or a diet soda. Wine, beer and cocktails can add a lot of calories to a meal. Also, studies have shown that people who consume alcohol with their meal also eat more.
- Start with a simple tossed green salad, which will help fill you up. Avoid high-fat choices like Cobb salad or Caesar salad! - Consider ordering an appetizer or side dish as your entree. Often, appetizers offer a more realistic portion than the “supersize” regular menu items. If you order a regular entree, and the portion is too large, take half of it home.
- Skip dessert, or order a fruit or berry dish. Creative diners might even find “dessert” on the breakfast menu: a fruit and cereal combination.
- Finish you meal with a non-fat cappuccino or latte, instead of an after-dinner apéritif or dessert.
