Many of the classic western films that were made in the 1960s and 1970s were about obtaining gold bullion. The characters in the films were either trying to steal the gold or they knew where the gold was located. Everyone had aspirations of becoming rich, which made movies based on retrieving gold extremely popular. While there are several classic gold bullion based movies, these are the three best.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly stars Clint Eastwood and was released in 1966. The film revolves around three completely different men that must work together to find $200,000 worth of gold that is buried in a cemetery. The American Civil War is occurring, but these three men ignore the war and work together until they know the exact location of the gold. Once the exact location of the gold is determine, a shootout ensues between the three men, which leaves only one man riding off with the gold. The Good, the Band and the Ugly is one of Clint Eastwood’s finest films, and is the best movie based on the search for gold.

A Man Called Sledge

A Man Called Sledge was first released in 1970 and stars James Garner and Dennis Weaver. Just like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, A Man Called Sledge is considered to be a Spaghetti Western; usually produced and directed by Italians. This role was very atypical for James Garner, but it is one of the best of his career. The plot of the movie revolves around a man purposely getting himself arrested in order to retrieve gold that is stored in the prison. The actions of Sledge are some of the more extreme taken by a character to get his hands on gold, but it shows how dedicated a few individuals were in their hunt to get rich.

Kelly’s Heroes

Kelly’s Heroes has one of the best casts for any gold based movie and stars Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Donald Sutherland. Kelly’s Heroes was released in 1970 and is one of the only gold bullion based movies that is a comedy. The plot revolves around several American soldiers who go behind enemy lines after they learn of a bank containing $16 million in gold. The film is another example of characters ignoring a war in their hunt to find gold and get rich. The characters get themselves into some funny situations in their hunt for the gold.  Whilst the film isn’t particularly serious about the issue of war; many still consider it one of the finest war films ever made.

Gold has always been featured in movies as a way to get rich. The characters will stop at nothing to obtain the gold despite everything that is occurring around them. Everyone wants to believe that they can get rich someday, which is probably why gold bullion based movies are so popular.
