How to set up a home office for efficiency, looks and functionality.
When you’re setting up a home office, you have a few natural problems and considerations- Space and décor. You want something that’s functional, but you also want something that looks nice. After all, this is your home, and you want that extra element of comfort and amenities. The really good news for home offices is that modern office furniture is a lot more home-friendly than most people realize- As long as you get it right from day one. There are some serious Do’s and Don’ts to consider.
The Do’s for setting up a home office
The trick with planning your home office layout is space management. This is absolutely critical, and it can even effect your daily work. A good layout makes work easy, a bad layout makes everything hard work.
The Do’s for home office layout are all practical considerations:
- Check your equipment and its space requirements- This may seem basic enough in theory, but in practice, if you’ve ever spent time trying to access your equipment, you need to ensure you can access everything easily and naturally, and avoid the “obstacle course” effect. Measure your cubic space requirements for your computer, peripherals, and any other equipment which is usually in the office working with you. (Note:A good corporate-style workstation can solve all of these issues quite easily, keeping everything handy.)
- Define a space for yourself- People come in different sizes, and you’ll know what’s a comfortable sized working space for yourself. Make sure you allow some leg room and can move around easily. This is a safety measure as well as a comfort option. If you get cluttered, you can be bumping in to things and feeling trapped in the workspace, not exactly the healthiest relationship to have with your work area.
- Files, records, computer and systems materials- These things need to be easily accessible (and findable) but otherwise out of the way. Dedicate some space for them and consider your preferred storage options.
- Seating- You may or may not want extra seating in your home office. It’s a good idea to have a couple of chairs available which you can use as required, preferably office chairs for presentation purposes.
- Amenities- Would you like a coffee table or a sort of “sit down and chat” space? If you’re using a dedicated office space, you’ll need to plan that area and set aside space for it.
The Don’ts for setting up a home office
The Don’ts are all about space management. There are some serious risks to avoid at all costs:
- Don’t get carried away with unnecessarily big furniture- The shiny big desk looks great, and is likely to become a health hazard in terms of navigating around it in a space that’s too small for it. That’s also the case with big chairs and tables.
- Don’t forget about office cleaning- Some home offices can get so cluttered that they’re almost impossible to keep clean. This can make for a very unpleasant working environment. (Note: It’s a good idea to get commercial cleaners to do this job on a regular basis to make sure your office environment is healthy.)
- Don’t go nuts with your office budget- You can get excellent, top quality office furniture, cabling and office filing and storage at good prices. Shop around and ask suppliers about their deals. You’ll get useful answers and solutions.
Setting up your home office can be real fun. Take your time, consider your needs, and you’ll have a beautiful office.
