Wondering what usually causes hair loss? Here are some of the most common reasons why people become bald.

Getting a hair transplant is a great way to hide the effects of hair loss, but do you wonder what causes hair loss in the first place? Despite the fact that hair loss is so common, there are a variety of reasons why you could be losing your hair. Here are some of the most common causes of hair loss.

Pattern baldness

In pattern baldness, the growth cycle of the hair shortens and your hair thins out significantly. After each growth cycle, your hair gets increasingly weaker and starts falling out. This type of hair loss is often genetic; if someone in your family is bald, you are likely to become bald yourself.

Scarring alopecia (alopecia is the scientific term for baldness or hair loss)

This is a more mysterious hair loss cause that happens in people with skin conditions like lupus. The hair follicle gets inflamed and causes scarring of the tissue, which stops any new hair from growing again. Other than taking care of the underlying condition, there is no known solution to this problem.

Alopecia areata

Scientists don’t know the cause of alopecia areata. Considered an autoimmune disorder, alopecia areata causes the patient to lose hair in big quantities before it all grows back. People with this condition often lose and regrow their hair several times. It may be a genetic condition or it might be triggered by viruses or environmental causes.

Telogen effluvium

This is a more temporary condition caused by an extreme mental or physical stress, for example an accident, death or other shock to someone’s system. The hair growth cycle is prematurely ended and the hair falls out before its time. The lost hair eventually grows back, but it may take some time before your system recovers and returns to normal.

Traction alopecia

This condition is more often seen in women who wear hairstyles that pull tightly on their hair. The pressure on the hair follicles becomes so high that the scalp scars and there is damage to the root of the air. The solution is simply to stop pulling on the hair and the problem should solve itself.

Hormonal changes

Again seen mostly in women, hormonal changes can affect the growth cycle of the hair. Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause or thyroid problems can all affect hair growth and cause hair loss. However, it is normal for women to lose more hair about 3 months after childbirth because hair growth was stimulated during pregnancy. Too  much testosterone can also thin hair on the scalp. Dealing with the underlying hormonal issue will usually solve the problem.

Other hair loss causes include poor diet and eating disorder, certain medications, diseases like lupus and diabetes, chemo or radiation therapy, damaging hair treatments, scalp infections and a mental disorder called “trichotillomania”, or “hair-pulling disorder”.

Hair replacement surgery can help restore your hair to its former state. Consult with a hair transplant specialist to figure out the cause of your hair loss and the solutions available to help with your condition.
