Man’s lust for gold bullion stretches throughout history.  Wars have been fought over it and civilisations have risen and fallen as a result of it.  So it isn’t surprising that that there are numerous films with a plot that centres on gold.  Here we look at three of the greatest gold bullion films ever made.

Kelly’s Heroes

This offbeat comedy set in World War II tells the story of a group of soldiers that go AWOL with the aim of robbing a bank situated behind enemy lines.  The lead role of Private Kelly is played by Clint Eastwood, who having caught a Colonel from the German Intelligence finds a bar of gold bullion in his briefcase.  The Colonel is killed shortly afterwards by an attacking tank – but not before Kelly manages to get him drunk enough that he reveals where the cold has come from.  Kelly and his men make use of their three days upcoming R&R to take a jaunt 30 miles behind enemy lines in an attempt to secure the gold for personal profit.

Three Kings

This film followers a similar line to Kelly’s Heroes and many have commented that it is nothing more than a modern day remake.  Indeed this piece is set to the backdrop of war, and begins with soldiers coming into information that details the whereabouts of a stash of gold bullion.  The three soldiers, played by Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and George Clooney set off to locate the loot.  However, unlike Kelly’s heroes their root to the gold is pretty uneventful and they are able to secure their target without bloodshed.  It is after this that they witness and atrocity that prompts them to put the gold on the back burner and set about rescuing some hostages.  Whereas Kelly’s Heroes is fun packed jaunt of soldiers seeking their fortune; Three Kings does raise ethical questions and some thought provoking issues.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Clint Eastwood gets another mention in this classic spaghetti western directed by Sergio Leone.  Again we see men searching their personal fortune in gold bullion as war rages around them – this time the American Civil War.  The plot is filled with deals struck and promises broken between the three lead roles; Blondie, Angel Eyes and Tuco, as they search to locate a treasure of confederate gold buried in a graveyard.  The film is widely regarded as a masterpiece and is not only one of the best gold bullion related films; it is one of the greatest films ever.  If you haven’t seen any of the films on this list then The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is definitely the place to start.
